Summary

The field between Chapel Hill and the River Yare is one of the locations in which so-called "sub-crag" implements were recovered during the early 20th century. Although these objects were claimed as deliberately worked implements at the time, they are most likely naturally-fractured flints.

Map

Before 1916. Stray Find.
According to (S1) Markshall was one of the locations in which so-called "sub-crag" implements were recovered prior to 1916. The Markshall specimens were found by H. H. Halls and it is noted in (S2) that they were given to the Norwich Castle Museum (most likely NWHCM : 1924.83.6).

It should be noted that although potentially worked implements of this type were the subject of much debate during the early 20th century, most are now thought to be naturally-fractured flints.

Although the location and circumstances of these discoveries are not described in (S1), they are recorded by (S2) as having come "…from the field between Chapel Hill and the Yare". The mapped location of this record is almost certainly based on this description.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 31 March 2014.

A minor excavation undertaken in this area by J. E. Sainty in 1928 is now recorded under NHER 9580.
