Civil Parish NORTH ELMHAM, BRECKLAND, NORFOLK

1715. In a close called Money Pightle, two furlongs (1/4 mile) south of town, on East Dereham road.
Roman coin hoard found in digging carrots. 'All about were old walls and foundations of buildings' (S1); (Blomefield has 'old wells').
(S1) volume II (Norfolk Records Office) gives two coins in 1735 : obverse; CAESAR DIVI F DOMITIANVS COSS VIII, head to right. Reverse; PRINCEPS IUVENTU; animal in compartment.
Another: obverse; LVCII CAESARIS ANTONINVS (female head to right), reverse; CONCORDIA (figure on chair left).

These are taken from drawings by Martin. Blomefield gives varients of these and adds one VESPATIANVS AVG, reverse; Peace seated with olive branch. Blomefield's whole account is lifted from Martin, Martin says 'very many coins'; Blomefield 'a pint and a half'.

Directly after this account Blomefield adds a coin CONSTANTIVS NOB CAESAR, reverse; GLORIA EXERCITVS, three trophies between two soldiers. Also a silver ring with intaligo of eagles holding thunderbolt. He implies these come from the same site, but in Martin these are just drawn on the same page with no indication that they are from the same site. According to R. R. Clarke's card Haverfield dated the hoard to about AD 170 to 80 but said these last two must be an error of Blomefield's. Martin elsewhere states the ring was found 'with many others' and that it belonged to Dr Brown.
E. Rose (NAU), 16 October 1979.

The name Money Pightle does not occur on the tithe or enclosure maps; from the directions though it seems to have been somewhere in the region of Spong Hill.
