Summary

Two possible sites for Secke House, marked on 18th century maps. They are a pair of artificial mounds that could have been building platforms. Fieldwalking has recovered medieval pottery fragments, shells and animal bone.

Site of Secke House on 18th century tithe map for North Lynn St. Edmunds. (from NCM map sheet).
However KLM 6 inch map marks this as Secke Howe indicating a field name.

20 December 1985. Fieldwalking in young winter cereal.
Context 1; odd medieval sherds over field derived from contexts 2 and 3 CLE AI.
Context 2 at 5805 2147. Artificial mound about 56m south west to north east by 56msouth east to north west but not perfectly circular. Mound is about 0.6m high at 2.7m OD. Covered with moderate medieval pot; shell moderate to abundant including oyster and bone. CLE 4.
Context 3 at 5803 2152. Artificial mound 64m by 60m though mark on aerial photograph slightly smaller, covered with medieval pottery, sparse to moderate, ditto bone, moderate shell. CLE 5.
(Either of these could be the Secke Howe).
