Full Description
Pre 1740. Stray Find.
Bronze Age copper alloy socketed axehead found "under one of tumuli in Methwold Field".
There is apparently a drawing of this object in (S1).
In the mid 18th century the axehead was in the possession of Rev. F. Blomefield, being described in (S2) as "…the head of a Danish spear made of brass which was found under one of these tumuli, in Methwold Field…".
Information from record cards (S3) and (S4). There is a sketch of the object on the reverse of (S3), although a note added at a later date suggest that this drawing is inaccurate.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 17 September 2018.
1914 to 1915.
Three round barrows rediscovered. Skeleton and flint knife found.
1987.
Barrows relocated or else three new barrows discovered, with prehistoric and Late Neolithic worked flint.
See details in file.
See (S5).
E. Rose (NAU), 4 July 1990.
1992. Walkover Survey.
Fourth barrow, to north-east of three relocated and now confirmed, discovered during fieldwork on route of Denton-Stoke Ferry Pipeline.
It had been damaged by tree planting. Trees to be removed.
See reports (S6) and (S7) for further details.
E. Rose (NLA), 13 May 1992.
