Summary

A tithe map dated to around 1840 notes that this field is called 'Barrow Duel'. No barrow has been noted on this site, and it is thought that the name may refer to a boundary marker on this site during the Late Saxon or early medieval periods.

Map

Around 1840. Field name 'Barrow Duel' on tithe map.
Note that other barrows in Norfolk have the name 'doule' meaning a boundary mark. This site is on the border with Hempnall.
The current 6 inch Ordnance Survey map (revised before 1930) names the adjacent lane as Barondole Lane.
E. Rose (NAU), 12 May 1980.

6 July 1982.
No sign of barrow here.
A. Lawson (NLA).

But compare with site NHER 13180. One of these references is either wrong, or else there were two markers.
E. Rose (NAU), 5 October 1984.
