Location

Map sheet TF92SE
Civil Parish NORTH ELMHAM, BRECKLAND, NORFOLK

Map

Barrow in Roundhill Breck on Mr Thomas's Farm, about 3.2km (2 miles) north of Elmham church between Guist and Ryburgh roads. The name of the farm was Bradfields, and the barrow was sited in the corner of breck.
Excavated before 1829 by Goddard-Johnson after coins had been found. A cart load of stones with burnt wood was found at the base, but the barrow had already been plundered. Information from (S1).

Suggested by R. R. Clarke (NCM) as Dunham Hill, but located by P. Wade-Martins (NAU). The current grid reference is correct position (not where first marked on record map).
'Arrangement to excavate Corry's alleged barrow' in (S2). R. R. Clarke suggests the same site.
E. Rose (NAU).

27m in diameter, 30cm high in field of young cereal.
A.J. Lawson (NAU), 16 January 1976.

Copy of (S1) in file.

December 1983. Now very spread, under sugar beet.
J. Wymer (NAU), December 1983.

Field under 'set-aside'. Barrow easily identifiable and appearing slightly higher than the 30cm suggested in 1976.
H. Paterson (NAU), 14 June 1993.

Mound now once again under cultivation, beet lifting operation, causing 'rutting' over the site.
H. Paterson (NLA), 18 December 1998.
