Summary

In the early 1970s substantial 18th century brick foundations were discovered during redevelopment of 99-100 High Street. It has been suggested that the foundations may be from the High Bridge (NHER 5476) that bridged the Purfleet in the medieval period.

Map

1972 or 1973. Field survey.
Site of medieval Purfleet.
18th century retaining wall on wooden raft found south of Purfleet. Arched brick drain below.
Report in urban survey (this report could not be located in 2019 and no reference is made to this work in (S1)).
S. Dunmore (NAU), April 1974, amended A. Cattermole (King's Lynn UAD), 23 July 2019.

9 October 1973. Site visit to 100 High Street.
Note in King's Lynn Museum field book that pilers working at 100 High Street 'hit massive brick foundations at 4.5m depth'.
Difficulties with piling all along north side of site. Brick foundations 1.5m (5ft) down to about 2.75m-3m (9-10ft), with freestone at the bottom. Too massive for ordinary house foundations (therefore perhaps part of the High Bridge or the wharf wall). A long way back from the High Street, but map of 1830 and drawing of 1860 show a house on the western side of the bridge, therefore the bridge foundations must extend far enough west to carry it.
E.M. James (KLM).

R. Trett (KLM) suggests that this wall was possibly the foundation of the High Bridge, but E.M. James (KLM), who saw the site, says it is too far west for this, and too massive for house foundations; 1.5m to 3m (5-10ft) deep with freestone at bottom.
This seems to contradict E.M. James' notes in the King's Lynn Museum field book (above).
E. Rose (NAU), amended A. Cattermole (King's Lynn UAD), 23 July 2019.

Finds found in box from this site:
1 pink medieval looking brick fragment; 1 roof tile fragment in green-brown glaze medieval?; 1 fragment shelly limestone with two dressed faces at right angles.
Finds to KLM in 1982.
A. Rogerson (NAU).

See report in file.

Was this the location of the medieval undercroft recorded by Henry Baines for Hillen in 1865?
It was said to be at the 'foot of the High Bridge'. See (S2) in file.
No - this was to northwest of bridge, see NHER 63515.
E. Rose (NLA), 16 March 2000.
