Summary

Medieval and post medieval finds have been found when parts of a possible medieval moat were bulldozed. The finds include medieval to post medieval building material, pieces of pot, a 17th or 18th century leather shoe and a circular brooch. Pits 'full of black soil' and a possible brick kiln were recorded when a pipe trench was cut.

Map

1963. While bulldozing north of remains of moat.
Early medieval and post medieval sherds found. Also a millstone.
E. Rose (NAU), 24 May 1978.

1978. Visit.
Wet ditch, overgrown by trees; width and depth make a moat possible. Another ditch parallels it to north, but this was probably cut when the wood was made. Field north of wood produced much medieval brick, tile and stone, including odd yellow tile-like brick with red inclusions. This south ditch shown on (S1).
E. Rose (NAU).

1979. Pipe trench cut from road, along north side of ditch as far as small pond/pit on Ordnance Survey.
Medieval sherds, both glazed and coarse; pits 'full of black soil' seen in sides. Near pit a brick circular structure seen, called a brick kiln. Also near pit 'at a great depth' a well preserved 17th to 18th century leather shoe.

West of road.
A circular cast bronze brooch with settings, late medieval to post medieval.
See (S2).

A circular brick kiln would be very unusual.
E. Rose (NAU).

2 May 1980. Visit.
Small selection of medieval wares on surface (context 1).
A. Rogerson (NAU), 2 May 1980.
