Full Description
Course of Roman road suggested by P. L. K. Schwabe.
In two sections, TF 7060 2140 to TF 7130 2158, and TF 7170 2169 to TF 7190 2180.
The second (eastern) of these passes north of the villa site and was called very doubtful by R. R. Clarke (NCM) on 19 October 1958.
Roman and Late Saxon sherds from site NHER 3579 were dumped on here from site NHER 3579 in 1950 and taken to [1], see file under NHER 3579).
That part of the western section that passes through site NHER 11789 does not appear on (S1), and the furthest western section, marked as unfenced road on (S2), appears on (S1) (June 1982) simply as a single white line not ditched.
E. Rose (NAU) 16 August 1982.
Shown as a Roman road in (S3), in Roman villa report 'a straight bank with a ditch on either side, indicating very clearly a Roman road. The direction of this bank was towards Grimston Church, where it ceases, but in following on in the same line it was found it fell into other roads and could be apparently traced in a direct line as far as the Peddar's Way'.
See (S4).
R. J. Rickett (NAU) 31 April 1990.
25 July 1996. NLA air photography.
Parchmark of road visible to north of villa site (NHER 3575) approximately TF 7170 2170 to TF 7185 2175.
A northern flanking ditch can be identified alongside.
S. Massey (NLA), 22 November 2001.
