Full Description
May-July 1999. Trial Trenching.
Excavation of seven trenches (Trenches 17-22):
Neolithic flintworking site with ditches and pits.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
E. Rose (NLA) 29 June 1999. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 19 March 2014 and 5 December 2022.
January-February 2000. Excavation (Contexts 60-261).
Open area excavation of 50 x 50m area immediately north of Three Score Road, Bowthorpe (in vicinity of evaluation Trench 11).
Pits and a possible small roundhouse-like structure of Early Neolithic date were identified. A cluster of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age pits was also found, one of which contained 183 Beaker pottery sherds (representing 17 vessels). A fragment of a hazelnut shell from this pit yielded a radiocarbon date of 2500-1950 cal. BC.
Considerable quantities of worked flints, including tools, were found associated with both the Early Neolithic and Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age features. Evidence for earlier activity was limited to a single Late Mesolithic flint microlith.
The evidence for prehistoric activity was overlain by a Roman field boundary or enclosure system.
See assessment report (S3), draft publication (S4) and published article (S5) for further details. This results of this work are also summarised in (S6). The prehistoric pits are discussed in (S7).
D. Gurney (NLA), 12 December 2001. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 19 March 2014.
Earlier discoveries previously detailed under this record are now recorded elsewhere. See NHER 60014 For details of Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic/Neolithic works flints recovered during the 1920s. Finds recovered during the 1970s and 1980s are now recorded under NHER 25167 and NHER 60013.
P. Watkins (HES), 19 March 2014.
An archive comprising material from both phases of work at this site has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2022.253).
P. Watkins (HES), 5 December 2022.
