Summary

A late 16th century timber framed house with a remarkable method of jettying based on a single post. The arrangement of the chimney stacks suggests it was an extension of an earlier house, now demolished. It has a mid to late 17th century brick extension to the west. It was heavily restored in 1975 when a rebuilt 17th century staircase was added. During the restoration a wallpainting was found, allegedly of a cardinal and hence the change in the name of the house.
