Map

May 1975.
Human remains found in spoil from this site (dumped near Mill Farm, Morley TG 0660 0045 map TG 00 SE)
At least three individuals, male, female and child (C. Wells). Also animal bones (E. Rose (NAU)).
Said by excavator driver to have been found in earthen bank edging Thieve's Lane between site grid references. Bank 'higher than a car' removed to allow machines into site. One end remaining, only 0.9m (3ft) high, shows in section yellow clay topped by soil containing late 19th century pottery. Bones in dump were in similar soil; pottery in remaining bank could well be intrusive.
Fields, now housing estate behind bank have been pasture and crop for at least seventy years. There is a small cemetery across the road with gravestones dating from 1880 to 1903.
Site of bank is to be grassed over and made into footpath.

June 1975. Visited with finder - nothing visible.
Thieve's Lane is said to get its name from the practice of lodging criminals in transit to Norwich nearby.
E. Rose (NAU) 4 June 1975.
