Summary

Lower Farmhouse was a 17th-century building which was refaced and roofed in the 18th century, and extended in the 19th century. It was destroyed by fire in around 2000.

Listing Description:
Farmhouse. 17th century, re-faced and re-roofed in 18th century, refurbished and added to in early 19th century. Brick, flint with brick dressings to rear outshut and pantile roof. Two storeys. Eastern half of main block with symmetrical façade of three bays with two early 19th-century tripartite sash windows with glazing bars beneath skewback arches with cambered soffits. Three early 20th-century gabled half dormers above with plate glass sashes. Central panelled front door with simple pilaster doorcase. Platband and dentil cornice. Platband stops for no apparent reason at about 10 feet from west gable-end. Panelled door to western half of façade with a simple gabled porch and an 18th-century three-light window above with metal casement and horizontal glazing bars. Simple 19th-century two-light ground floor window beneath skewback arch with cambered soffit. West gable-end with 17th-century gable and rear pitch of 18th-century gable fossilized both with tumbling-in. 17th-century English bond brickwork. Early 19th-century continuous lean-to-beneath catslide roof. Varied fenestration with one large tripartite sash window with glazing bars. Principal stack off-centre and axial with two angled shafts partly obscured by later additions. Further axial and gable-end stacks. Central room has apparent beams with barred chamfer stops to bridging and common joists. Early 19th-century room to rear with an unusual reeded plaster cornice and a reeded door architrave with corner paterae.

It has now been reported that Lower Farmhouse was destroyed by fire around 25 years ago [1]. The present farmhouse is a new building that was built on the footprint of the original dwelling.
