Full Description
August 1980. Visit.
Pair of derelict cottages under restoration. Structurally one building, timber framed clay lump or wattle and daub with central two-sided 19th century chimney stack. Studding only visible inside, large straight diagonals in corners. Unusual external upright posts, plain ones centre of north and south walls. Unhewn tree trunks towards west end of same walls, rising to eaves. The pair on south rest on 19th century brick plinths as do the house walls. Roof of rough-hewn branches supporting thatch. Upper floor dormers; divided room towards east end upper floor has window in internal dividing walls. House windows long and low - some have been part blocked. Not possible to see interior in detail, but none of the woodwork looked old or reused. This could be an interesting example of an early 19th century cottage built in the traditional style of the area.
E. Rose (NAU), 22 August 1980.
(S1) giving location as Harling Road (should be Larling) dates to late 17th century but only describes exterior after
renovation. Grade II.
E. Rose (NAU), 14 July 1986.
