Summary

This is the site of a lime kiln marked on Faden's map of 1797. The bell has been recorded as a bat roost and a clunch and brick triangular tunnel remains. An adjacent kiln was destroyed about 1970.

Bell filled in, clunch and brick triangular tunnel remains. An adjacent kiln was destroyed about 1970.

1992.
Propped up and damaged by rabbits. Occasionally used for burning rubbish which suggests the pot has been reopened. Information from [1].

2001.
Planning application to convert surrounding area to chalets, refers to the kiln as a bat roost and says the bell will be emptied of dumped rubbish. Otherwise left alone.

Site first marked on Faden's map 1790 (S1) 1ins O.S. map 1838 shows just "pit" (S4) however Tithe map 1838 does show "kiln" (S5). It is also listed in White's and Kelly's directories between 1845 and 1937. (S6) (S7)
Last known firing was 1962 (15 years previous to NIAS document from 1977).
