Summary

A flint and brick house, dating from the 17th century, with substantial alterations carried out in the 19th century. In the past this house has been confused with the manor house of Cockthorpe, see NHER 10250 and NHER 12750.

May 1983. Listed, Grade II.
House as 16th century and later flint, brick dressings, pantiles. T plan, 2 storeys, much altered but 16th century or 17th century evidence to each wing. Main entrance wing 3 bays, late 19th century canted bow of 2 storeys, and gabled porch. L return range with evidence of earlier brick mullioned windows. Set back behind this pile and exposed at left, a wing with random fenestration; also evidence of built-up brick mullioned windows. To north, wing at right angles, gable with external stack bracketted out; octagonal stack, moulded 16th/early 17th century. Infilled gable windows with brick quoins and parapet also. Return façade with infilled mullioned windows. On axis with this gable in valley to south a moulded 17th century brick stack.

(S3) claims this was the original 17th century Hall of Sir Cloudesley Shovel, but the name Hall for this property seems to be recent.

Examination suggests this is an L shaped building of about 1600 to which additions (probably farm buildings) were made in the 17th century; these were reduced and converted in the mid 19th century into living accommodation.
