Full Description
1982. Site visit.
Moat on (S1) shown as circular with small attached pond on south. OS survey still correct.
Ditches very wide, muddy but apparently normally waterfilled. Island overgrown and featureless. Causeway on southwest by pond whose function is obscure (did it have a spring and act as a feeder? - small for a fishpond). Owner says this is known locally as Golden Cradle Moat (combination of Golden Gates and Cradle Moat legends) and is thought to have been the site of Boughton Manor (mentioned in S2).
E. Rose (NAU), 24 September 1982.
1990. Found in clearing out moat. [1]
Two sherds Late medieval or Transition ware.
Identified by W.Milligan (NCM).
Finders reported also that 'possible remains of a bridge' had been found, but there was a footbridge until recently.
E. Rose (NAU), 17 September 1991.
Further details: LMT jug base sherd in the shape of baluster jug, with specks of glaze.
Green Glazed granular fabric sherd possible drain pipe?
W. Milligan (NCM), 15 October 1990.
18 September 1991. Site visit.
See (S3), sketch plan and 1990 photographs in secondary file.
D. Gurney (NLA), 18 September 1991.
26 September 1995.
Rim (large sherd) of medieval jug, partially lead glazed externally, reduced, with attached, twisted rod handle, found on outer slope of moat in north-east quadrant. [2], [3].
A. Rogerson (NLA), 7 November 1995.
October 2004.
Moat broad, up to 7m, waterfilled. Several mature trees on interior, with much bramble, scrub and dead wood. Orchard planted to east where dredged material spread. Owners will undertake clearance of brambles during the winter months.
H. Paterson (A&E), 5 November 2004.
Management Statement signed 3 January 2005.
H. Paterson (A&E).
