Summary

The Grange farmhouse is marked on old maps as a moated site. A watching brief maintained during groundworks at this site in 2023 suggested that the interior of the moat had seen at least a degree of truncation during the construction of the extant dwelling during the 1980s.

The Grange (=Bridge Farm), moated (Ordnance Survey antiquity).

May 2023. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with the alteration and extension of The Grange.
Although the various foundation trenches excavated all reached natural geological deposits no archaeologically-significant feature or deposits were observed. There was clear evidence for disturbance and at least some degree of truncation associated with the original construction of the extant dwelling, with a modern made-ground deposit lying directly about the natural geology.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 2 May 2026.

November 2023. Excavation.
Excavation of site of proposed swimming pool at TM 15787 83080, immediately to the north of the surviving western arm of the moat.
No archaeological features or deposits were revealed and no finds recovered.
The Shimpling tithe map (S1) suggests the excavated area coincided within a gap in the western arm of the moat, which had originally continued to the north, connecting with an east-to-west aligned section running along the line of the extant field boundary to the north of The Grange.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 2 May 2026.
