Summary

An old road and ford crosses North Elmham common and is visible as earthworks along part of its route. It is lined by ditches and in places there are double banks to the west of the road. The ford is metalled. There is no evidence to date the road, although it is shown on Bryant's map of 1826.

Map

1978. Field Observation.
The course of an old road is marked on Bryant's 1826 map of Norfolk (S1). Boundary ditches can be seen right across Beetley Common and a metalled ford was seen by [1]. The metalling was followed north by probing to firm ground by [2]. It is uncertain when this activity took place.
E. Rose (NAU), 26 October 1978.

The track across the common is still marked on (S2), but it is now totally overgrown and invisible. A modern farm road follows it for a few yards then diverges sharply to the east. No metalling was visible at the ford. Cattle use the south side to get round the fence from the common to the meadows.
E. Rose (NAU).

March 1995.
Dieback of vegetation revealed a central section of the road. It is 3m wide with a ditch on each side (1.5m wide by 1m deep) and banks along the outer edges.
E. Rose (NLA), March 1995.

April 2005.
The earthworks of the road on the common are again clear. The line of this road, which is marked on early maps of North Elmham as Old Norwich Road, is continued to the southwest by Common Lane. On the west side of this there remains in places a double bank, each with old trees on top, and a ditch between them.
E. Rose (NLA), 4 April 2005.
