Map

No mapped location recorded.

Prehistoric objects recorded as having been found in the parish of Brockdish, but with little additional information regarding provenance.

Pre 1907. Stray Find.
Brockdish is listed in (S1) as one of the locations in Norfolk that had produced Palaeolithic objects prior to 1907. According to (S2) Brockdish was also marked by W. G. Clarke as having produced "Palaeoliths" on a (now destroyed) manuscript map. In both cases this is likely to be a reference to a note by J. A. Holmes in (S3), that describes the discovery of a potentially Palaeolithic implement that had been found in situ within "…a newly opened pit at Brockdish...". This is described as "…evidently intended for fighting purposes…nearly semicircular, the entire edge eight inches in length, and with a natural hole through the substance of the stone towards the back, which could be utilised for…hafting". The location of the new pit mentioned is not known, although it may well be one of the pits shown in the vicinty of the village itself on the 1st Edition O.S map. The artefact itself cannot be traced and there must remain considerable doubt as to whether this was indeed a Palaeolithic object.

The above information is summarised on (S4) and Brockdish is also listed as a findspot for Palaeolithic material in (S5), (S6), (S7) and (S8), although no additional information is given.

As noted by (S9) Brockdish is also listed in (S1) as having produced Neolithic implements of "Boulder Clay Type". No other information is given, apart from a note that these finds had been recovered by W. A. Dutt.

Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 8 January 2014.
