Full Description
2 March 1983. Fenland fieldwalking.
Context 1.
Scatter medieval pottery across field but mainly associated with roddon on which lie the following. Also three Late Saxon sherds.
Context 2 at [1].
Scatter of medieval pottery, quite a lot of bone, a little shell. Also a large amount more modern debris. Includes two Late Saxon and two Middle Saxon sherds.
Sits on roddon but material well scattered over area 50m northeast to southwest x 30m.
Arguably it is part of larger spread incorporating Contexts 3-4 but there do seem to be gaps. 3.4m (11ft) OD.
Context 3 at [2].
Medieval pottery, abundant bone and some shell and brick.
Last of these extending a post-medieval spread along roddon. Also five Middle Saxon, many Late Saxon.
Some soil discolouration in roddon in vicinity of Contexts 2-4 but not necessarily contiguous with pottery spread.
As likely to be post medieval as anything else.
70m northeast to southwest at 3.4m (11ft) OD by 50m northwest to southeast. See comment under Context 2.
Context 4 at [3].
Scatter of abundant bone, some shell, very little medieval pottery.
Discolouration may be due to post-medieval activity. Five Middle Saxon sherds
However clearly is a site, on top of large roddon.
Adjacent to modern house and site may have run under this. Minimum of 20m north-to-south x 25m east-to-west at 3.7m (12ft) OD.
