Summary

During the 19th century numerous pits were noted on Marsham Heath. A number were excavated and shown to contain evidence for fires. Unfortunately no dating evidence was discovered. Local legend tells that the pits were used by rebels from North Walsham.

Many pits on Marsham Heath.
Some dug by [1] showed strong traces of fire. Pits 1.5m to 3.6m (5 to 12 feet) in breadth in gravel and sand.
1850 one opened in presence of [2] and [3]. 0.3m (1 foot) from bottom of pit undisturbed gravel found - nothing to indicate human occupation.
