Full Description
No. 2 is a 16th century jettied house, passage to south crossed by wooden arch, with timber framing visible in passage walls.
Exterior seen 6 July 1977 by E. Rose (NAU) when house was empty and in poor condition.
(S1) mentions two good fireplaces and plaster ceiling
This building was formerly included in site NHER 12597 by mistake.

1984. Building Survey of Nos. 4-6 (adjacent, NHER 63498).
Surveyor was unable to get access to No. 2 but noted that it appeared on internal evidence to be part of same original building. Sat in the north gable wall, almost concealed by plaster, is a blocked doorway giving access to No. 2, the former Post Office.

1993. List Entry amended.
(S3) dates No. 2 as late 14th century or possibly early 15th century. Timber-framed with brick infill and pantiled roof, rare parallel hall plan, jettied front and rear. Two storeys and attic. Inserted 17th century stack. Three sets of rebates in front wall for shop arcade shutters.

This building and adjoining No. 7 St Ann's Fort (NHER 12597) were Southgate's general store and Post Office for a large part of the 20th century.
