Map

9 January 1986. Site visit. In pasture immediately east of garden, ditch curving across southwest corner
of meadow.
This is the site of a suggested circular moat. The moat appears to continue into the garden which has been landscaped at some time - with a long flat mound covered in trees next to fence, the rest being fairly flat - which obscures evidence. At the south edge of meadow the curve is cut by a channel; a second channel joins this at angle but is not shown on the OS and the ground is clearly disturbed. The feature has a diameter of fifty paces or so, and it survives to a depth of 30cm (1ft).
E. M. James (KLM) 9 January 1986.

(S1) marks circular ditched enclosure off stream at about the same place - not clear if this is same as above, or has been partly filled in.
E. Rose (NAU) 21 January 1986.

Ashwood Lodge is externally 18th century and is recorded as Pentney Hall on 1838 OS.
