Summary

Prehistoric flints and medieval tile were apparently found here 1958. Subsequent fieldwalking was part of the Fenland Project noted several sparse scatters of prehistoric worked and burnt flints. Although the majority of the worked flints were not closely datable a small number of pieces were tentatively identified as Mesolithic/Early Neolithic and Early Neolithic.

Map

October 1958. Stray Find.
Found by B. Beeby at TF 6613 1095 (Context 2):
Flint flakes and medieval tile. Findspot recorded on KLM 6 inch record map; on NCM map this has been confused with site NHER 3468. Information from (S1) and (S2).
E. Rose (NLA), 21 May 1981.

20 October 1986. Fenland fieldwalking.
Bare soil except for some crop regeneration. Several discrete concentration of material identified:

Site WGY AQ (Context 1).
General scatter of worked flints over field. This small assemblage included 2 flakes, 7 blades and a serrated flake, some of which are potentially Mesolithic or Early Neolithic.

Site WGY AO (TF 6614 1076; Context 3).
Small scatter of worked flints on top rather than side of ridge. Area about 26m E/W x 15m N/S at 3.5 to 4m OD. Flints not closely datable.

Site WGY AP (TF 6620 1091; Context 4).
Small scatter of worked flints on sandy ridge side above peat. About 22m N/S x 21m E/W, about 1m above peat, 4m OD. This small assemblage of flints was possibly Early Neolithic and included an end scraper and a serrated blade.

Site WGY 10 (TF 6629 1079; Context 5).
Sparse spread of 'pot boilers' and worked flints on sandy ridge, generally spreading across whole of emerging mineral soil. About 44m NE/SW x 40m NW/SE at 3.5m OD WGY 10. Flints not closely datable.

Site WGY 11 (TF 6622 1079; Context 6).
On edge of sandy ridge above peat hollow. Sparse spread of worked flints with a few 'pot boilers'. About 25m E/W by 15m N/S at 3.4m OD. Worked flints not closely datable.

Site WGY 12 (TF 6617 1078; Context 7).
Sparse spread of 'pot boilers' on edge of ridge. Cut by ?modern pipe trench and filled in dyke. About 25m E/W x by 16m N/S. About 1m above peat. 4m OD.

For further details see project archive (S3) and final publication (S4).
R. J. Silvester (NAU), 10 November 1986. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 26 November 2013.

1989-90.
Further work carried out on this site, with particular reference to contexts 5/6/7. Auger traverses were carried out and the waterlogged deposits, in the adjacent buried channel, sampled in a dykeside section. On the basis of the fieldwork a dossier was prepared for Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission, copy in file.
