Summary

A ring ditch of probable post medieval date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs. The ring ditch, which has a narrow internal bank, has been levelled and is visible on later aerial photographs as a cropmark. The function of the ring ditch is not known – it could relate to a stack sand or a marsh refuge – but the site appears to be depicted on 19th century maps.

The undated ring ditch described above was mapped as part of the Norfolk Coastal NMP Pilot project, undertaken by Suffolk County Council, but no record was added to the NHER. The specific photographs it was mapped from are not known, but a circular earthwork is visible at this location on mid-1940s aerial photographs viewable online (S1). It was mapped with an internal bank, and was suggested to be a possible stack stand or marsh refuge. It appears to be depicted on 19th century historical maps, including the Tithe map (S2) and the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S3). As described above, the site is visible as a cropmark on more recent aerial photographs and has presumably been levelled.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk County Council, Historic Environment Service), 26 May 2020.
