Summary

A large undated flint-lined well, undated pits and an undated cobbled surface, possibly a road, were found during construction work on this site in the 1970s and 1980s. A large number of finds have been discovered here including Roman, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval and post medieval pottery sherds and metal objects.

1976. Found in service trench.
A number of features are cut into the gravel, including five pits up to 2m wide and a well constructed with chalk blocks. Pottery from the spoil heap included Thetford ware and an early medieval pottery sherd.
1 pottery sherd later reidentified as Ipswich ware by C. Dallas.

(S1) notes that the well was 11 feet deep. Massive flint and chalk foundations. Stone mortar found.

1979. From area mostly east of ruins.
Thetford ware pottery sherds including 5 rims.

Before April 1987. From south-east area of estate, between ruins and A11, presumably from disturbed ground.
Late Saxon metalwork including a brooch, an openwork fitting and a coin of Harthacnut (1040-1042).

June 1987. Visit during topsoil stripping, context 2.
Flint cobbled surface, approximately 4m wide, aligned approximately east-west. The east end of this feature was outside of the stripped area and the west end was cut by a north-south chalk wall, perhaps a late medieval or post medieval structure. On or in the surface of the cobbled road, three horseshoe fragments were noted.
