Full Description
Visited. 30 March 1977.
Unusual 17th century house, perhaps even earlier: 2 storeys, 6 bays on lower floor but only 5 bays on upper.
Central 2 bays on ground floor with 18th century door between them project slightly, and projection rises to eaves (but not beyond) having one window in it on upper floor, and narrowing slightly giving the impression of a huge chimney breast.
Cornice crosses the projection but not string course.
Probably a vestigial porch-tower. All other first floor windows have aprons. Elaborate shaped gables, but east one destroyed on top by a later chimney. Good condition.
(S1) says projection is 19th century addition covering 4 original bays.
Inside is fine dogleg stair with Corinthian capitals as newels etc, and panelling en suite, including Ionic bedroom. Many early 18th century doors. Fine stone fire surround of about.1680 - brought in? 19th century fireplace with Delft tiles.
E. Rose (NAU) 25 October 1985.
