Full Description
2 August 1978. Visit by E. Rose (NAU).
Cottage in Wash Lane.
Early 19th century wattle and daub timber framed cottage with brick and clay lump contemporary extensions; large contemporary clay lump barn, and later brick and flint farm buildings. Not really of interest to us, but in internal wall of late building is reset ashlar block (with fossils) now upside down, with inscription W S 1822 (right for building of house) and inserted between letters are two other sets of initials with date 1842 - is this a marriage stone? Also scratched roughly in is date 1910 other way up, showing stone built in here before that. Where did ashlar come from - NHER 9038?
E. Rose (NAU) 2 August 1978.
The 1843 tithe map shows this cottage with a small outbuilding to south, but not the barn, so that must be later.
The 1836 1st edition 1in Ordnance Survey seems to mark this as 'Gryure's' (?) manor house, presumably demolished before 1843.
1991.
Outbuildings and barn now extended to form new house and separate property from the main house.
