Map

Site of brick works.
Both sides of Repps Road and railway, on Boygates Estates. Kiln was in north section.
Information from NIAS record (S1).
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU) 30 October 1980. Information from record card (S2).

Site owned by John Goose in 1841 and 1845 according to Tithe map and White's Directory (S3) respectively. The Ordnance Survey Second Edition 25 inch map (S4) shows a rectangular pit to the north of Repps Road at TG 4479 1758, which is also labelled 'Old Brick Kiln'. A series of much larger pits are depicted to the south of Repps Road.

W. Arnold (HES), 6 December 2010. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 21 November 2022.

March 2017. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site to north of Repps Road.
This survey revealed a large area of magnetic disturbance at the southern end of the site that appears to coincide with the clay pit shown on the Ordnance Survey Second Edition 25 inch map (S4) at TG 4479 1758.
See report (S5) and NHER 66484 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 November 2022.

January 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site to north of Repps Road.
Remains associated with the brickworks were revealed in the southernmost trenches. These included the corner of a brick-built brick kiln, the position of which suggests it was almost certainly the structure noted on the Ordnance Survey Second Edition 25 inch map (S4). Several probable clay extraction pits were also recorded, which contained debris from brick production, including wasters.
See report (S6) and NHER 66484 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 November 2022.
