Map

1950. Stray Find.
Found at Mundford School while excavating site for new classroom:
1 Roman top stone of rotary quern. Found 2' [61cm] down beneath blown sand. Broken in being dug out. See sketch (S1).
This discovery was reported in the local press (S2), although the dating given was wrong.
Preserved at Mundford School [1].
Sample submitted to Dr K.G. Dunham (Geological Survey Enq. 1128 of 22 May 1950) reports it to be of 'calcareous glaucanitic sandstone, composed of quartz grains up to 1.0mm diam, pellets of glauconite and rare grains of microcline in a matrix of coarse calcite. I have little doubt that the source is the Lower Greensand formation of Kent (Kentish Rag) and would mention that we have had previous examples of the importation of this rock into East Anglia in early Roman times'.
Information from (S3).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 25 November 2015.
