Full Description
See NHER 9741. Road diverted before 1840 to present course, but this section abandoned, presumably when railway built in 1848.
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU).
The above information, based on notes by R. R. Clarke (NCM), is incorrect.
NHER 9742 and the southern part of NHER 9741 are the turnpike of 1768.
NHER 9742 was abandoned under the Dunston road order of 1839, NHER 9741 and the present road being used instead.
See the NAU report filed under NHER 29734.
July 2006.
The section north of Mangreen Lane remains only as a field bank. The section to the south has been mostly made into a concrete drive for the grid station; it is a large hollow way 8m wide but how much of this is due to the recent remaking (around 1970) is not known.
[1] noted the junction of this hollow way with a steep field bank running west halfway down its course and suggested this was part of a Roman fort. However, the field bank seems to be simply a lynchet, as the field to the north is level with its top and that to the south, level with its base.
E. Rose (NLA), 16 August 2006.
