Summary

Linear soilmarks visible on aerial photographs represent post medieval field boundaries depicted on historic maps and subsequently removed. The marks were initially interpreted as the line of road, possibly Roman, in part due to their proximity to the postulated course of a Roman road between Crownthorpe and Watton (NHER 52027), but there is little evidence to support this.

August 2011. Norfolk NMP.
The soilmarks described above, postulated to be the remains of a road - possibly a Roman road - are visible on aerial photographs (S1). They appear to correspond with field boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey 2nd edition 25-inch map (S2) between TG 0560 0369 and TG 0601 0359. Thus while the possibility that they represent part of a road of whatever date cannot be ruled out entirely, there is little evidence to support this interpretation. As a consequence they have not been mapped by the NMP, although the Monument Polygon for the site has been altered to incorporate the former field boundaries. See too NHER 8893 with which the site overlaps.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 16 August 2011.
