Cut by Vermuyden in the 1650s.
The Wash between this and the Old Bedford River was designed as a flood reservoir.
Runs southwards from 5870 0100 to the county boundary and beyond. In fact built in 1651, to supercede the Old Bedford River as the main channel for the Ouse Waters.

At Welmore Lake Sluice (NHER 55394) the river is joined by the River delph which is stated to be a 19th century construction, see NHER 13529. In 1999 the 1931 sluice was replaced, revealing earlier remains believed to be associated with the 1825 sluice. See NHER 55394 for further details.
