Summary

Fieldwalking indicates that this was probably the site of both an Iron Age and a small Early Saxon settlement. Prehistoric flint implements, including a Mesolithic flint blade and a Neolithic flint axehead have also been recovered during fieldwalking on this site, along with fragments of pottery dating from the Roman to the post medieval periods. Subsequent metal-detecting between 2006 and 2023 has recovered prehistoric worked flints, including a potentially Mesolithic blade and Neolithic end scraper; Roman, Early Saxon, Middle Saxon, medieval, medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; undatable copper alloy casting waste; undatable iron smelting slag; Iron Age, Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; post-medieval jettons and tokens and a range of other, Bronze Age to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include a Bronze Age axehead; a Late Bronze Age gold pendant; an Iron Age spiral-headed pin and probable horse-harness pendent fitting; an Iron Age/Roman harness mount; Roman brooches, a finger ring and copper alloy hairpins; Roman/Early Saxon buckles, an amphora-shaped strap end and strap fitting; Early Saxon brooch fragments (including a silver knob), a wrist clasp and possible girdle hanger fragment; Late Saxon stirrup mounts and a strap end; a Late Saxon/medieval buckle; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; medieval keys, horse-harness pendants, horse-harness mounts, padlocks, a spur buckle, end cap from whittle-tang knife, monumental brass fragments, cast copper alloy cooking vessel fragments, lead pot mends, lead weights and a lead seal matrix; a medieval/post-medieval whittle-tang knife shoulder plate, possible tap, coin weight, copper alloy vessel fragments, copper alloy rings and lead weights; post-medieval book clasps, harness mounts, a purse bar, pocket sundial/ring dial, key, rowel spur, spur leather attachment, sword belt fitting, candlestick, crotal bell, mount, furniture escutcheon plate, hinge plate, copper alloy seal matrix, copper alloy furniture nail/tack, lead powder charge cap or measure, lead weights and lead cloth seals.
