Full Description
Visited by H.D. Hewitt on 24 September 1903 and 2 December 1909.
?Barrow. One of two mounds on Gallows Hill (see also NHER 5744).
See (S1) and (S2).
Only 15cm (6 inches) high, fourteen paces diameter.
A gallows is marked on one of these mounds by (S3).
Copy of NCM card by R.R. Clarke (NCM).
No sign in fallow field.
A. J. Lawson (NAU), 11 February 1976.
(S4) suggests there may be some confusion between this mound and NHER 5744.
E. Rose (NAU), 7 July 1986.
January 2011. Norfolk NMP.
This site was not visible on the available aerial photographs.
E. Bales (NMP), 19 Jan 2011.
August 2014. Field visit.
This barrow mound did not survive as an earthwork when the adjacent barrow (NHER 5744; S4) was excavated in the 1970s. After these excavations, a landscape mound was created on the site. The removal of some of this landscape mound prior to 20 August 2014 may have removed below ground remains associated with this barrow.
D. Robertson (HES), 11 September 2014.
September 2014.
A re-examination of the available aerial photographs suggests that two possible mound features may be visible as parchmarks on photographs from 1946 (S5) (J.Albone pers.comm.). These may relate to the round barrows NHER 5744 and 5745 but it was not possible to be certain of this.
E. Ford (NMP), 03 Sept 2014.
January and May 2015. Watching Brief.
Maintained during work to convert site to south to car rental.
An initial phase of ground reduction exposed a patchy yellow brown silty sand layer that potentially represented the remnants of the mound excavated in 1978-1979 (NHER 5744). It is suggested that this material may have also represented the remains of this northern mound - assuming that it had indeed lain to the south of its recorded position.
No discrete features were observed and no finds recovered.
See report (S6) and NHER 5744 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 10 February 2025.
