Summary

A hoard of over 800 Late Saxon silver pennies hidden in a pottery jar was discovered by workmen in 1958. The coins date to the late 9th and early 10th centuries. Further investigation in the area revealed fragments of Late Saxon pottery and animal bones.

Late Saxon coin hoard of 883 silver pennies found in digging trench for new houses [1].
61cm (2') of soil overlying gravel. Base of jar was at 68cm (2'3") from surface in hole which had been dug to 86cm (2'10"). Concealed about AD 925. This hord is now kept in British and Norwich Museums.
Treasure Trove inquest 10th March 1958.
Other Late Saxon Thetford Ware found nearby and is now in NCM.

1958. From trenches dug by builders adjacent to site of Late Saxon coin hoard.
Sherds of Thetford ware and animal bones. NCM 3.959.

July 1996. Groundworks associated with construction of new college sick bay observed on an occasional basis.
Four large pits dug for soakaways revealed 61cm (2ft) of topsoil over sand/gravel, deepening to 91cm 120cm (3-4ft) in the pits on the south side. Foundation trenches also observed. Area very heavily disturbed by earlier drains etc.
No features or finds.
