Summary

In 1919 a number of potentially Palaeolithic flint objects were recovered from the cliffs and shore at Trimingham. These were thought to have been associated with the Cromer Forest Bed deposits. Although these are not particularly convincing as implements it is possible that at least one was a Palaeolithic flake. In 2020 a Lower Palaeolithic flint handaxe was found on this section of the beach.

Map

Unstratified finds recovered on the section of Trimingham beach from the northern terminus of the sea defences and groynes to the Trimingham beach access ramp.

1919. Stray Find.
According to (S1) a note on an NCM map records that Lower Palaeolithic implements have been found along the foreshore at Trimingham. No recent sources record any such objects so this is almost certainly a reference to an article by J. Reid Moir (S2) in which he describes a variety of objects he and others had found during an examination of the cliffs and shore between Trimingham and Bacton in 1919.

The finds from Trimingham described and figured in (S2) include:
1 unpatinated, unrolled flint scraper recovered from clay that had fallen from the cliffs deposit (Fig 55C).
1 flake found on the shore at low water, lying on the surface of a greyish coloured clay (Fig 55D).
1 "rostro-carinate flint implement" found on the shore (Fig 55E).

These object are noted on (S3) and in (S4). Wymer notes that they are not particularly convincing as artefacts, although "...at least one that is figured may be a flake".

It should be noted that the location marked by the NCM record map is most likely only a very rough estimate of where these objects were recovered.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 24 June 2014.
