Summary

Downham Grove house is a 17th or 18th century house with an 18th century southeast façade. There is a Gothick extension of 1840 and the house sits near a rectangular water-filled feature which is thought to be a fishpond rather than a moat.

Map

Downham Grove with ?moat.

June 1980. Visit.
Moat-like feature indicated on (S1) (apparently in area revised 1945) has been dug out and part filled in so that only an amorphous overgrown pond survives. The house, to northeast, has a southwest gable of brick with two blocked circular windows, a 17th century feature (but in this area it persisted well into the 18th century, see eg. Hill Farm TG 143 049). Southeast façade certainly 18th century: Gothick extension added around 1840 and windows altered to match (lodge on Norwich Road of same date). Outside front door is a circular stone with central square hole - probably part of a column or stand rather than a quern. Also a large Ionic capital, but this is a recent import and is thought to be foreign.
E. Rose (NAU), 4 June 1980.

From the larger scale maps, it is questionable whether there was ever a moat here; it seems to be marked as a rectangular pond surrounded by a fence, thus giving the impression of a moat.
E. Rose (NAU), 18 November 1983.

(S2) and (S3) confirm this has always been only an oblong pond.
E. Rose (NLA), 21 April 2005.
