Location

Civil Parish CLEY NEXT THE SEA, NORTH NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

Mound 18.3m (20yds) in diameter, 0.75m (2.5ft high). Situated 4.6m (5yds) from north boundary and at right-angled corner, 18.3m (20 yards) west of where enclosure boundary turns practically due west.
Flakes found in 1936/1937 by member of the public [1].
Ploughed 1950.
Information from (S1).
R. R. Clarke (NCM).

Member of the public [2] ploughed the field to north in 1920s. He says this mound was much larger and extended right up to and beyond the north boundary; the portion north of the fence was already ploughed out and in ploughing over it again by horse he found a pot (S2) about 60cm (2ft) high, decorated, with collar (collared urn?) which was complete but broke as he lifted it.
Earlier another ploughman had found two other pots (S2) (?Beakers?) possibly at the same point, but almost certainly in the same field (note Beaker excavated to north at NHER 6178). These were preserved by the vicar.
E. Rose (NAU).

January 1974. Visit.
No sign of mound.
A. J. Lawson (NAU), 30 January 1974.

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Site of ploughed out Bronze Age barrow on arable land to the west of Taylors Wood. No sign of the ploughed out barrow or associated ring ditch were not visible on any of the available aerial photographs and therefore this site was not mapped by the NMP.
S. Massey (NMP), 7 May 2003.
