Summary

A large number of the fields to either side of the Peddar's Way Ringstead and Sedgeford parishes were subject to fieldwalking during the early 1930. This worked recovered a significant number of prehistoric worked flints, including Neolithic leaf, hollow-based and petit-tranchet derivative arrowheads, a Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead and a number of scrapers, picks and other implements. A selection of this material was given to the Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. At present the exact composition of the assemblage is unclear and precise findspots are only known for a small number of the objects (these now recorded under seperated NHER numbers).

1933-1934. Fieldwalking.
A large area to the south-east of Ringstead village was subject to fieldwalking by H. le Strange between 1933 and 1934. The area investigated extended from Ringstead Church Road to Sedgeford Belt and the Ringstead to Docking road, taking in a significant number of the fields on both sides of the line of the Peddar's Way. A large number of worked flints (said by le Strange to be "of EBA facies") were recovered including Neolithic leaf, hollow-based and petit-tranchet derivative arrowheads, a Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead and a number of scrapers, picks and other implements. The bulk of this collection was given to the Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (34.17-24; 34.47-50; 35.1201-25; 36.453-65 and 35.967).

Although the maximum extent of the area walked is known, it is too large an area to map. Its extent is that shown for Event ENF202. Although the exact provenance of many of the flints is not known, a number of individual findspots are however recorded. These are as follows:

Context 1 (TF 713 399; old O.S field 80):
Flakes. Now recorded as NHER 59672.

Context 2 (TF 7161 3974; old O.S field 69):
Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead. Now recorded as NHER 59673.

Context 3 and Context 4 (TF 7149 3951 and TF 7145 3931; old O.S field 60):
2 Early Neolithic leaf arrowheads. Now recorded as NHER 59674.

Context 5 (TF 7120 3948; old O.S field 66):
1 Neolithic hollow-based arrowhead. Now recorded as NHER 59931.

Context 6 (TF 7253 3920; old O.S field 44/306):
1 Early Neolithic leaf arrowhead. Now recorded as NHER 59932.

Context 7 (TF 7205 3981; old O.S field 7):
1 Early Neolithic leaf arrowhead. Now recorded as NHER 59933.

Context 8 (TF 7200 3859; old O.S field 301):
1 Neolithic petit tranchet derivative arrowhead. Now recorded as NHER 59934.

Context 9 (TF 7170 3850; old O.S field 300):
1 Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead. Now recorded under NHER 1621.

Context 10 (TF 7160 3872; old O.S field 8):
1 Early Neolithic leaf arrowhead. Now recorded under NHER 59935.

Context 11 (TF 717 388; old O.S field 8):
Worked flint flakes. Now recorded under NHER 59935.

1972. Fieldwalking.
Further fieldwalking was undertaken in these fields by le Strange in 1972. The finds recovered were assigned a series of field numbers by le Strange but it is clear that these were not the same as the old O.S field numbers for this area. Some of his field numbers are marked on a map that he produced in 1980 (see Secondary File for NHER 1595). At present the location of Field 18 remains uncertain. le Strange recovered a number of Neolithic worked flints, including a rough flint axehead and several scrapers. These finds were identified by T. Clough (NCM) and donated to the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1972.603.2). Information from (S3).
These finds were reported in (S4) and are noted on (S5).
P. Watkins (HES), 20 December 2013.

Pre 1999. Fieldwalking.
A number of finds that le Strange had recovered in this area were accessioned by the Norwich Castle Museum in 1999. It is unclear when these were found. As with the earlier finds these were marked simply with le Strange's own field numbers. As a result there are some that can only be identified as coming from this general area. These are as follows:

Field 9:
Neolithic worked flints (NWHCM : 1999.326.5.2.1).

Field 2b (Geddings Farm):
Neolithic worked flints, including 1 scraper, 12 flakes (2 retouched), 1 core and 1 thermal flake (NWHCM : 1999.326.5.2.3).
