Map

1954. Stray Find.
Site opposite south Denes Power Station.
Roman pottery.
Information from (S1).

1955. Field Observation.
Digging for foundations of South Denes Generating Station.
Cutting across spot from west to east has exposed from surface to minus 6.1m OD. Also north to south cutting.
Pottery Saxo-Norman to medieval, iron anchors (S2), animal bone.
Level of low water spring tides in late 13th century was about 4.8m below OD.
Low water mark then 3m below that of today, therefore spit stood 3m higher then in relation to sea than today.
Observation by C. Green (NCM) and J. N. Hutchinson (NCM).
Information from (S3). There discoveries were reported in (S4) and were the subject of newspaper articles (S5) and (S6). See also (S7).
The finds themselves were donated to Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1955.150).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 13 March 2018.

The sketches in the file indicate two main findspots: the water intake in the river (probably the 1954 site 'opposite' the power station) and the turbine hall. Neither of these is marked on the 1:2500 Ordnance Survey map as such and thus a more detailed grid reference cannot as yet be given.
E. Rose (NAU) 9 February 1996.

1996. Desk-based Assessment.
See report (S8), which gives accurate location for original finds; map and grid references so altered.
This work was noted in (S9).
E. Rose 24 July 1996.

Source [1] notes that he found pots and a 'hearth' during the construction works, which were apparently never reported; but the details suggest it is part of the same material.
E. Rose (NAU) 30 June 1999.

April to July 2000. Watching Brief.
Negative results.
See report (S10).
D. Gurney (NLA) 18 October 2000.
