Summary

A mound, possibly man-made but of unknown date, is depicted on historic maps and is also visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs. If the mound is man-made, it could date to any period, but there is scant evidence to support this suggestion. Rather, there is a strong likelihood that the mound, which occupies a small knoll, is of natural origin, and perhaps represents a geological outcrop.

Map

A. J. Morris considered it possibly artificial.
R. R. Clarke (NCM).

November 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The broad outline of the mound described above is depicted on historic as well as modern maps, e.g. the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch (S1). Within this area, a lozenge shaped mound is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1946 (S2), centred at TG 3180 2949. It is this inner feature that has been mapped by the NMP. If the mound is man-made it could date to any period. It seems equally (or even more) likely, however, that it represents a natural knoll, perhaps formed by a geological outcrop. At the same time, it is notable that the mound, which is named Crome’s Hill on modern maps, is marked ‘Coomes Hall’ on Faden’s Map of Norfolk (S3), on which it is also shown with a track along its west side. The significance of this is not clear.

The mound, as mapped by the NMP, measures approximately 73m long and 31m wide. It could be surrounded by a ditch but no such feature is clear enough to map.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 28 November 2006.
