Cropmarks of a possible Iron Age to Roman farmstead are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S4). The central grid reference for these cropmarks has been amended from TG 3850 0038 to TG 3851 0040. A rectangular enclosure is present with external dimensions of 84m by 76m. It is defined by a 3m wide ditch and has a possible entrance on its west side. A gap in the ditch on the south side is due to an area of different soil type preventing clear cropmark formation. Within the enclosure is a ring ditch cropmark. It has a narrow ditch and a diameter of 17m. Small gaps are present in its perimeter on the south south-east and north north-west sides. Although it is possible that this is a Bronze Age ring ditch, it is more likely that it relates to an Iron Age roundhouse. To the south-east of the possible round house is an incomplete rectangular enclosure cropmark. It measures at least 18m long by 11m wide and could relate to a structure. These possible buildings are contained within the large rectangular enclosure and are likely to belong to an Iron Age to Roman farmstead. A linear ditch cropmark extends west from the north-west corner of the enclosure and appears to be contemporary with it. Several linear ditch cropmarks of unknown and post medieval date (NHER 36506) cut across the enclosure.
J. Albone (NMP), 21 June 2007.
