Summary

An earthen mound has been recorded at this location. This was felt to be a Bronze Age barrow or the upcast from a pit of unknown antiquity. A visit to the site in 2003 showed that the earthen mound had been greatly reduced and existed as an almost imperceptible rise in the field.

Location

Map sheet TG30NE
Civil Parish STRUMPSHAW, BROADLAND, NORFOLK

Map

Mound in arable field around 152m (500ft) east of Hassingham Farm.
?Barrow or upcast from pit on west side but this may be old excavation.
Some cremation urns have been found in this parish.
Seen by R. R. Clarke (NCM) 27 December 1947 and around ten years before when field was under pasture.
Information from NCM card.
The cremation urns in fact came from NHER 10279, so if R. R. Clarke (NCM) meant the pit might be the excavation which found them, he is wrong.
E. Rose (NAU) 21 November 1979.

More likely to be upcast than a barrow.
A. Lawson (NAU) 1979.

Dimensions 19m x 40m. However there is still a possibility that the cremation urns may be connected.
A. Lawson (NAU).

March 2003.
Almost imperceptible rise in arable field.
H. Paterson (A&E) 28 March 2003.
