Summary

Metal detecting on this spot recovered two silver groats of Mary I, and seven of Elizabeth I, the latest dated 1573. This collection was probably a hoard of coins buried together, although the coins were all found spread over a small area. Groups of coins can be spread around by modern ploughing and this is what may have happened here.

7 June 1980. Metal detecting. West of scheduled moat, in what was Besthorpe Carr.
At depths of up to 20cm (8 inches), over area 3m (10 foot) square.
Two silver groats of Mary, and seven of Elizabeth, the latest dated 1573. Coins temporarily lodged at NCM.
Note - Find reported to Diss Coroner who will await further investigations in autumn before proceeding to Inquest.
