Full Description
Pre 1984. Stray Find.
Found on field of College Farm:
1 prehistoric perforated pebble hammer of fine quartzite with 'hour-glass' perforation. Signs of heavy battering at both ends and some worn facets. Length along major axis 12.7cm. Weight 1250g. See sketch (S1).
Donated to Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1984.202).
Perforated quartzite pebble maces of this kind are not closely datable, having been found in both Mesolithic and later prehistoric contexts. The heavy nature of this example does however make a post-Mesolithic more likely.
J. J. Wymer (NAU) 10 February 1984.
Information from (S2).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 19 July 2013.
