Full Description
1886.
Barn known as Abbey Barn near Wolterton Manor House (= East Barsham Hall) demolished. Fragments of alabaster crucifixes and statues were found, with carved stones including a royal arms. The alabasters were speculated to have come from Walsingham, and the stones from the old church spire. They were in the possession of the vicar a few years later.
Information from NCM Bolingbroke Collection. See also (S1) and note below.
Grid reference is that of a large L-shaped barn marked on the tithe map but not there today, probably the one in question.
The Wolterton Manor House was formerly (wrongly) known as East Barsham Abbey.
E. Rose (NAU), 21 November 1979.
The alabasters were placed in East Barsham church and remained there until stolen in 1982; recovered soon after.
A faculty has been granted 1983 to donate them to Walsingham Museum..
E. Rose (NAU), 1 November 1983.
In fact not to the museum but to the Anglican Shrine, according to rector of Barsham in 1997. The alabasters were stolen from the church in 1930 and only one broken fragment was recovered. It was stolen again in 1981 and recovered in 1982. The faculty was never issued but the incumbent of the time states that he placed it in the safe at the shrine though it is no longer there.
E.Rose (NLA), 5 February 1998.
Ref (S2) has distant photograph of a stone head of a male, described as a Roman head said to have been found at East Barsham. Full ref filed under NHER 26179. The head may be one of the finds from this barn though there is no previous reference to a Roman head among them.
E.Rose (NLA), 20 February 1996.
(S1) says the barn was demolished 'about six years' before 1888 and that the fragments had previously been recorded by Dawson Turner in 1845 when it was suggested the carvings came from a house at Houghton St Giles or from East Barsham church spire, but that the probability was that they came from Walsingham.
E.Rose (NLA), 10 March 1997.
