Summary

This is the site of a large mill marked on 17th and 18th century maps. This was a smock mill that crushed linseed. The base of the mill survived on the site until about 1849, having been converted, perhaps for domestic use or for the manufacture of tar.

Copy of drawing in file.
E.M. James (KLM).

According to (S3) the mill was erected on a brick base that had a stage set on it and was later converted into a house after the mill had been dismantled. In 1849 the south-west corner of the Tower Field was home to a 'tar office' where pitch was converted into tar, and 'other unsightly buildings' (S4). At this time the land was given to St Margaret's parish for the erection of a school for 300 boys and 200 girls, St Margaret's National School.
There was also another oil mill in South Lynn in the 17th and 18th centuries (NHER 20436).
A. Cattermole (King's Lynn UAD), 14 May 2019.
