NHER 1981 (Find Spot record) - Palaeolithic flint cleaver and flakes and Late Saxon and medieval pottery

1932. Stray Find.
Found in gravel pit on common, north of road from Syderstone to Docking, east of 20 Acre Plantation:
1 Late Saxon pottery sherd (large sherd with external band of thumb printing). Now held by Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1953.177.36).

1 medieval pottery sherd (13th-century glazed ware).

8 August 1933. Stray Find.
Found by J. E. Sainty in a gravel pit north of the main road to Docking and east of 20 Acre Plantion:
1 Palaeolithic fragmentary "Acheulian cleaver" and 2 flakes. These object were donated to the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1959.41). Information from (S3).
The cleaver is described and illustrated in (S4), which also records how it was found during a visit to the pit with Dr. J. D. Solomon.
This implement is listed as a handaxe in (S5), which also record the flakes as both being retouched. These finds are also noted on (S6) and in (S7), (S8) and (S9). A sketch of the broken core tool on (S6) was probably copied from (S4).

A large ochreous flake from Syderstone was amongst a number of items from Sainty's collection that were donated to the Norwich Castle Museum in 1981 (NWHCM : 2007.319.15). This flake is marked "Syderstone (Hurn's Pit) 12/10/35" and was probably from this site. Although its condition is very similar to the flints found in 1933 it is not particularly convincing as an artefact and may well be natural.
